For this assignment, you are required to critically analyse and reflect on the recorded interview submitted for assignment 1.
This assignment requires you to engage with social work principles, theoretical concepts and ethical practice approaches. In your analysis, you should describe and explain the different applications of purposeful human service interviewing and the stages of an interview as well as the skills and techniques applied in each. You should critique your own skills, knowledge and effectiveness in the conduct of an interview and consider your own values, beliefs and stress.
Your analysis must be supported by at least eight references and adhere to Harvard referencing conventions. Both journal articles and textbooks are suitable to use.
There is a transcript template and a response identification table on the learnonline course website that you can use to help transcribe and analyse the video. You do not need to submit your transcript.
Please include a brief introduction and conclusion. This assignment must be written in paragraph form (i.e. not in dot points or question and answer form).
Please review your turnitin report prior to final submission. This may require you to upload the assignment, or a draft of the assignment, a few days prior to the due date.
Formatting requirements for this assignment are: size 12 font, 1.5 spacing, text justified, pages numbered, margin 2.5cm. Welcome to Interviewing Skills in Social Work and Human Services. This course will assist you to develop interviewing skills and knowledge vital to your professional development. During this study period, we will be focussing on enhancing your understanding of the interview process and helping you identify and develop your own interviewing style for future professional practice.
This is a practice based course. Most of your learning will take place in the studio, where you will practice and critique your interviewing skills. It is essential that you actively participate in these learning activities in order to prepare yourself for the assessment and gain important feedback.
This course outline provides you with a range of information including a course overview; resources; assessment details; and course calendar. The information in this course outline is also available on the course website where you will also find other useful links for assignment submission, forums and online readings.
There is a textbook for this course that you will need continual access to. The textbook and readings complement the topics covered in this course and are an important contribution to your learning.
The lecture slides will be available on the site on Monday prior to the lecture. Please print these out and write notes on them whilst listening to the lecture pod cast. The lecture recordings will be posted on the site shortly after the lecture. The course website will be continuously updated throughout the semester, so please monitor it regularly.
As this is a practice-based course, you are required to attend a compulsory two day workshop to practice your interviewing skills. There will be workshops offered at the Magill, Whyalla and Mount Gambier campuses so that you can attend the campus closest to you.
The weekly studio activities will be slightly altered for external students to enable your tutor to monitor your progress and understanding of the concepts covered in this course. These will be posted weekly under the relevant weekly tab. These activities will require weekly contributions to the external student discussion board. Please post your answer and respond to at least one other student’s answer. The more you put into this course, the more you will get out of it! There will be a separate discussion board for each week, please post your responses under the relevant week.

Course Aim
To enable students to develop and demonstrate effective human service interviewing skills and their appropriate application.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
CO1. Critically examine the main forms of interviewing in social work and the human services, their functions, forms and processes
CO2. Apply knowledge of the stages of an interview and the skills and techniques utilised in each including building rapport, assessment, problem identification, goal setting, implementation and evaluation.
CO3. Demonstrate the ability to report on interview outcomes
CO4. Demonstrate competence in structuring, focusing and directing an interview with clients from diverse backgrounds
CO5. Demonstrate the ability to be reflexive and accurately critique own skills and effectiveness in the conduct of an interview.
Course Content
Students wil develop knowledge of social work approaches and reflexive practice including Anti oppressive, empowerment, strengths based practice and solution focussed approaches, clinical decision-making and identifying, defining and evaluating outcome goals.
Students will use skill based learning to develop their skills in interviewing and the processes associated with human service interviews including developing the relationship, collaborative assessment, conceptualising and assessing client’s problems, concerns and contexts and working with resistance in diverse contexts and with a range of clients.

Assessment #1 – Interview Video (Graded)
This is an individual assignment focussing on your counselling/interviewing skills.
Record a 15- 20 minute interview with a *student from this class (a low-key real situation that is new to you) on DVD/USB from the beginning (without stopping). The interview must show all stages of the counselling process and your skills in active listening, paraphrasing and empathetic responses.
Choose one of the following questions to provide the focus for your interview:
-How would you describe a normal week in your current life?
-Who do you rely on for support when you need it?
-What area/s of stress is/are currently part of your life?
-How would you describe your own coping and skills and strengths?
-How would you describe your current health and wellbeing?
-OR your own low key situation (Check this with your tutor prior to recording).
You will be assessed on:
-The appropriateness and effectiveness of your responses;
– Demonstrated competence in structuring, focussing and directing the interview;
For repeat attempts a different situation or student is required. Please note that if the coordinator has difficulty accessing the taped interview, a second tape may need to be prepared.
