Utilitarianism requires us to maximise utility which means choosing the action (normally a moral action) which secures the greatest net benefit for the greatest number of all affected by it. Can you think of any current applications of utilitarianism?
Mill wants to ensure that we enjoy as much liberty as possible. He argued that we should be able to do whatever we like as long as we don’t harm others. How useful is this as a guide to our actions?
Do you agree with Rawls that the situation in to which we are born is largely a matter of luck and that situation largely determines our economic position in society? If you do, do you agree with his theory of justice?
Would you agree that the current government is increasingly Nozickean?
Are there some things that we should not be allowed to buy? Discuss some examples
