***SEE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW***
***USE WORKING THESIS FROM ATTACHED ASSIGNMENT***

For this assignment, you will write an annotated bibliography on three sources. For detailed information on how to create your Annotated Bibliography, see the Sample Annotated Bibliography and the Annotated Bibliography Template (Links to an external site.).

For the Annotated Bibliography, you will write annotations for three sources. One source should be a primary source. Though a primary source can be different things depending on the research project, for your Literary Analysis Final Paper in Week 5, the primary source is the literary work you selected for your Week 1 Proposal for Final Paper assignment.

Next, choose two secondary sources that are additional to the course textbook. Secondary sources are publications like textbooks, magazine articles, histories, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias, and so forth. An appropriate secondary source to use for your literary analysis is a scholarly source that interprets and offers analysis of a literary work.

The sources you locate must be academic sources and come from peer-reviewed journals or other scholarly publications. Your two secondary sources could come from the sources located in this week’s Performing Literary Research discussion.

Copy and paste the writing prompt you chose to explore in the Week 1 Proposal for Final Paper into a blank Word document.

In your Annotated Bibliography,

Revise the working thesis you created in the Week 1 Proposal for Final Paper assignment (include it below your writing prompt).
Identify your primary source (your selected literary work) and two secondary, academic sources in this same document.
Summarize each source. (Each summary should be 100 to 150 words.)
Explain how each source supports your working thesis.

The Annotated Bibliography

Must be 100 to 150 words in length (not including title and references pages and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style (Links to an external site.)
Must include a separate title page with the following:
Title of paper
Student’s name
Course name and number
Instructor’s name
Date submitted

For further assistance with the formatting and the title page, refer to APA Formatting for Word 2013 (Links to an external site.).

Must utilize academic voice. See the Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) resource for additional guidance.
Must use one primary source and two scholarly sources in addition to the course textbook.
The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment.
Must document any information used from sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.)

In this class, you have two tutoring services available: Paper Review (available in the online classroom) and Live Chat (Links to an external site.). Proposal for Final Paper Worksheet
Week 1 Prompt & Story Selection Log
Once you have decided on an approved prompt and approved text(s), respond to the questions
below. Please be mindful of the word count and double-space all of your responses. You
are to meet the minimum word requirement without going over the maximum number of words
requested.
1. What is your chosen prompt for the literary analysis assignment?
(Include the number and first sentence of the prompt you chose from the list of prompts.
The prompt is the main paper topic, not the story itself or the guiding questions.)
This is prompt two. The first line is “In some stories, characters come into conflict with
the culture in which they live” (Alexie, 2003).
According to this prompt, the characters to be considered must contain some outcast
characteristics which reflect the assumptions, values and morals of the surrounding
characters.
2. What text will you write about? (Full story title & Author name) How does the text
connect with the prompt?
“What You Pawn, I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie. This is the test that I will write
about.

It is connected to the prompt in a significant way because the narrator is an America
Indian that explains some of the difficulties he had to go through due to his ethnic
background. In other words, the character has a conflict with the culture of where he is
living. In other words, the text is about an outcast because he is homeless. From his story,
a person is able to characterize the society where he lives depending on how it treats the
narrator.
3. Read the story thoroughly and answer the following. Be sure to review key terms like
character, setting, and conflict before you answer:
a. Who is/are the main character(s) in this story?
The main character is called Jackson. He is a middle-aged American Indian who grew
up in Spokane but later moved to Seattle (Alexie, 2003). There are other characters
who are considered as his friends and strangers whose role in the play has enabled
Jackson to fill the details of his character.
b. What is the setting of this story?
The story is based on the time when there was racism in the United States. This is
because the narrator is trying to show how cultural differences made his life difficult.
He was homeless for more than six months. Despite the fact that he was a Native
American individual, he could not be treated like the other whites. Another setting of
the story is based on the street life. The author is trying to show the dangers+ of
living in the streets without anywhere to call a home.
INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE
4. What is the main conflict in the story? (Write 100-150 words describing this conflict)
The main conflict in the story is culture. According to the narrator, he feels alienated
from the society because of class and ethnic background. One of the conflicts is between
the narrator and the pawnbroker. The narrator claims that the pawnbroker has his
grandmother’s powwow regalia in his window which had been lost for a period of fifty
years. The pawnbroker is a white who refuses to believe the narrator because he is an
Indian. There was a conflict between the two to an extent that Rose and Junior who are
the friends of the narrator are forced to defend him saying that he is the most honest
Indian. Another conflict is between the narrator and the surrounding environment.
Everywhere he went, he was not able to raise the required money in order to buy his
grandmother’s pawn. This is because people saw him as a street boy.
5. Write a working thesis for your literary analysis essay below.
The working thesis for thesis for this story is: Cultural conflicts in relation to homelessness.
This is the best thesis statement for the whole story because right from the beginning, the
narrator has described the problems that he experienced in the street. Homelessness is the main
point in this essay which is linked to cultural differences. Cultural conflict has also been
addressed extensively in the essay with the use of the narrator current situation which is
homelessness. The narrator has experienced several conflicts which are related to the culture of
the nation he lives.

Explain how you determined this article was appropriate to this assignment and your essay
topic.
I determine the appropriateness of this article by skimming through it and checking for
material and concepts that are related to my essay. Although the articles took a different
perspective they all addressed the concept of the story and brought it to a larger context which
made them significant for my essay
Reflect on your experience using the Library Live Chat feature. What did you learn from
the librarian? What was different about searching using Library Live Chat versus how you
initially performed your research?
The Library Live Chat feature was insightful instrumental in showing me how to focus
my search in order to get the feedback I sought. The librarian taught me that in order to get the
best results there are certain phrases, key terms and parameters that are necessary so as to obtain
the desired result. The difference between the live chat searches and my previous practice is that
this time I was able to get results quickly. Further an analysis of what the searches yielded
showed that they were related to my study compared to the previous results obtained

Describe the core conflict represented in the story.
The core conflict presented in the story is cultural in terms of ethnic background as well
as in terms of social-economic factors. The main character Jackson who is of Indian origin has a
feeling of alienation as a result of both his class as he is homeless and ethnic background. As the
narrator, he has a conflict with a Whiteman who runs a pawnshop where he discovers his
grandmother’s powwow regalia which were stolen over fifty years ago and he has to raise a
thousand dollars to get it back
Describe the theme of the story.
A major theme in the story is cultural homelessness and perseverance. This can be seen
through Jackson’s life as he struggles to redeem the lost grandmother’s powwow regalia
(BookRags, n.d). On the other hand perseverance can be seen in his life as well as those of others
Indians in their ability to laugh despite their grim circumstances.
Select three literary elements/techniques in the story and describe them.
Some of the literal techniques used in the story include; allusion where the narrator refers
to a historical event of American exploration by Columbus and compares their facial features to
that of their friend saying; “Before Columbus Arrived Indian and I’m the After Columbus
Arrived Indian”.
It also employs First-person point of view where the narrator is the main character in the
story and tells it through his eyes.
The story also uses flashbacks to tell of events and stories that happened long before the
current story. For example Jackson gives a flashback of the grandfather’s funeral, stories his
ENG 125

grandmother had told about tending to a wounded Maori soldier in war and the jokes they had
shared.
Explain how the elements/techniques illustrate the theme and conflict expressed in the
story.
These elements are critical in illustrating the conflict and the theme of the story. For
example First-person point of view helps the reader seen the world through Jackson’s eyes and
the cultural homelessness, Flashbacks paint a picture of how things have been while the allusion
shows when the whole trouble began
