1. Precisely identify the assumptions that underlie conventional thinking in your company or industry.
I work for an online publishing/blogging company based in Seattle, WA. Our customers are legal
bloggers- mainly lawyers and legal professionals. We create website/blogs for legal bloggers and
syndicate their blog posts on our website. We rely heavily on technology and I would say we are good at
staying up-to-date with the latest technologies. We use social media extensively to build and maintain
relationships with legal organizations and for promotional/marketing purposes. All of our marketing is
through new media channels.
2. Think about what might be gained by proving one or more of them false.
Since all of clients are bloggers, there hasn’t been a great need to do advertising over traditional
media. However, I think advertising on print media could be beneficial. All of our clients work in the
legal community and from what I have observed, print media is still popular in the legal
community. Many law schools and legal organizations still publish print magazines.
3. Deliberately disturb an aspect of your normal work pattern to break up ingrained assumptions.
We have a community of 24,000 legal bloggers. Because blogs are written by lawyers and legal
professionals based on their own practices and current events, they are often regarded as “news
worthy” content. It is a community for lawyers to exchange ides, share opportunities, and learn
together. I think there is an assumption among the general public, however, that blogs are low quality
content – which can be true depending on the author. I think this assumption will lesson over-time as
more and more people are receiving their news from blogs, social media, and other online outlets.

Precisely identify the assumptions that underline conventional thinking in your
company or industry.
The idea of conventional thinking within my government agency and state government as a
whole is waste of public resources and taxpayers monies. People have the perception that
state workers do a little in return for what they are compensated. I currently work for the
State of Washington’s Labor & Industries and we focus on workers safety whilst at work.
We have inspectors who inspects various worksite to ensure that they are in compliance
with state and federal regulations in regards to workers safety and how to file claims in
situation of violations. The assumption is that as a state funded agency, any activity
performed by the agency must be justified and be accountable to Washingtonians. A few
years ago, there was public outcry that state workers were having barbeque and playing
music during business hours. Whilst this activity is very common within the private sector,
people couldn’t come to terms with the fact that their taxes are been use to have fun.
Meaning that if you work in public office, you are not allowed to have fun because someone
is paying for the fun.
Think about what might be gained by proving one or more of them false
In reality, the agency does more for workers in the State of Washington than just the one
off activity to ease stress at work. We have provided language interpretations and
translations in more than eight languages to accommodate the diverse backgrounds of
Washingtonians to be able to express themselves freely. We have also made it very easy to
file claims as well as shortening the processing times by more than half by using advanced
technologies. Because the agency has done very well in enforcing safety standards at work
and hence minimizing workplace injuries, people don’t really see the need of this agency
until they themselves or a family member falls a victim. Nevertheless, as a state agency, we
are here to ensure the safety of our workers and do our possible best for workers to
reunite with their families every day after work in a whole piece but not in pieces.
Deliberately disturb an aspect of your normal work pattern to break up ingrained
assumptions’.
Currently, I work as a database admin and I managed most of the claims filled at the
backend. When I attempt not to process request from the claims team by pulling data from
our databases, these claims could not be completed because the claims team would not
have any data to work with. Therefore if an injured worker thinks we are not doing
anything and hence are just wasting public funds, it is only at this point will he realized that
indeed, we are serving a purpose for Washingtonian workers.
