1. Explain Socrates’ situation as discussed by Frankena. Provide one of Socrates’
arguments as an example to explain the general form of moral arguments. Finally,
explain the three types of reasoning related to morality. Which of the three types are
relevant to moral philosophy? Why?
2. Explain the various wrong ways of answering moral questions according to Regan, and
then explain what problem Regan has with each. Do you think that Regan is
correct? Explain your reasoning.
3. Explain the general problems with basing morality on God/religion according to
Cahn. Explain the Euthyphro dilemma and what it is meant to demonstrate. Do you
think that the Euthyphro dilemma successfully explains the role that religion should play
in morality? Explain your reasoning.
4. What is cultural relativism? What are the various consequences of taking cultural
relativism seriously (Rachels considers three in the reading and two more are added in the
lecture)? Should a belief in toleration lead one to become a cultural relativist? Explain.
5. What are psychological egoism and ethical egoism? Does Rachels consider
psychological egoism to be a worthwhile theory? Explain. Does Rachels logically refute
ethical egoism? If not, what response does he offer? Finally, what do you think is the
appropriate relationship between self-interest and morality? How could/would Rachels
respond to your views?
6. What are the two conceptions of happiness discussed by Cahn and Murphy? What is the
purpose of the examples of Fred, Crimes and Misdemeanors, and Joan and Kate? Are the
people in the examples happy? If so, in what way? What do you think is the relationship
between happiness and morality? Explain your reasoning.
