COM 320 Final Project I Milestone Two Worksheet
For this milestone, you will analyze a news media example for media bias in its news coverage.
Important: This worksheet will become your milestone draft. Your completed milestone submission
should be 2–3 pages. Keep in mind that you will incorporate instructor feedback on this milestone into
Final Project I: Media Analysis and Recommendations, which is due in Module Seven.
Prompt: Address the following critical elements as outlined in critical element II (News Media Analysis)
of the milestone rubric document. Use the questions below each critical element to assist you in
addressing each element:
Start by identifying the news story, the newswire service (NBC, NPR, Time Magazine, etc.) that produced
it, and the news media system to which this newswire service belongs (e.g., broadcast news, such as
television or radio; print media, such as newspapers and news magazines; the internet, such as online
newspapers and news magazines). For example, if you watched a news story on CNN, the newswire
service is CNN, and the media system is broadcast news. BUT REMEMBER: this example names U.S.
newswire services, and you should select one from a country that is NOT your own!
A. Describe how the media produced by this newswire service compares with other newswire
services within same country (NOT your own country!)
How does the media produced by this newswire service compare with other newswire services
within same country? To address this question, look at differences and similarities in media
production by different newswire services (radio, online television, print, etc.) within your
selected country.
B. Compare the news coverage of the media system to which this newswire service belongs to the
news coverage of a media system in a different country (for example, if your selected country is
South Africa, you might compare news coverage to that of the U.S.).
How does the news coverage of the media system to which this newswire service belongs
compare to the news coverage of a media system in a different country? Look at the similarities
and differences in general news coverage between our country and the country of comparison.
C. Compare the way this news item is covered by the newswire service to how the news item is
covered by another newswire service within the same media system. Are there differences in
how this particular news item is covered?
Now we are looking at a specific news story you identified. For example, let us say you examined
a story that was presented on NBC (a television newswire service). Compare its production to the
way the same story is presented in other newswire services within the same system (CNN, Fox
News, etc.). What similarities and differences did you identify? (REMEMBER: this example shows
the U.S. as a country of analysis, but yours must analyze the country that is NOT your own)
D. Assess the news coverage in the country where the news media message was created, providing
evidence to support your claims.
Consider if overall news coverage in this country is accurate, varied, and balanced. Is it covering
both the positive and negative sides of the people, the culture, and the country as a whole? Here
you are looking at the culture of a country that is not your own once more.
