Purpose
This assignment is the first step in the process of completing your final project. By the time you
finish your Annotated Bibliography, you should have identified a specific subfield of museum
studies that interests you, as well as key debates in that subfield.
An important part of completing any research project is narrowing the scope of your thesis and
analysis, so a crucial aspect of this assignment is carefully choosing sources that will help you to
make an argument about one particular aspect of your museums. Ask yourself: What aspects of
these two museums and their programming will I use as “Exhibits” in the body of my essay? What
can I focus on to help me develop an interesting, nuanced argument that is sufficiently narrow to
be defensible in 8 pages? To help you narrow your object of study and therefore your overall
argument, here are some examples of subfields in museum studies. Be sure to choose one specific
area to focus on in your research:
•
Visitor experience
As you begin your research, use your narrow topic (two museums and a subfield of museum
studies), to create a Research Question. In your research, focus on finding sources that help you
to answer this Research Question.
Requirements
For this assignment you will use the library databases to conduct research that helps you to answer
your Research Question. Your sources of course can be about your specific museums, but they
do not have to be. Your sources can also be about museums or museum studies in general. For
example, if you plan to write your essay about education, you can include a source in your
Bibliography that is about educational strategies at museums in general, even if the source does
not specifically mention your museums.
Specifically, you are required to find and carefully read 6 scholarly articles or book chapters.
These are sources that contain concepts and/or arguments that you plan to cite in your Museum
Analysis. Do not use book reviews for this assignment. If you decide to use a book chapter, you
must restrict your discussion to only one chapter per book.
You must write an annotation for each source. Annotations have two main functions: to describe
and evaluate sources. For this assignment, I’m asking you to include the following:
• A careful, concise description of the source’s key arguments, concepts, and perspectives
• A detailed response to those arguments, concepts, and perspectives in which you explain
whether you agree/disagree with the source’s central arguments and explain why
1
•
•
An explanation of why these concepts will be important to discuss in your Museum
Analysis
1-2 pieces of background information from each source that you think will be useful in
your Museum Analysis (remember that an article can be used as an argument source and
a background source in the same paper!)
Additional Requirements
In addition to fulfilling all of the components above, here are some additional requirements to
pay close attention to:
• 4 full pages
• Accurate APA citation for each source
• Citations appear in alphabetical order by author’s last name.
• Each annotation immediately follows its citation
• Sources are either scholarly articles or chapters from scholarly books
• Direct quotation is kept to a minimum. If you must quote from your source, limit your
quote to 2 sentences
