For my topic of interest, I am intrigued by the influx of technology in society and how it affects people psychology, specifically their phobias. Two major new phobias have become more prevalent in the last decade or so due to the rise of technology: nomophobia and technophobia. Nomophobia is the irrational fear of not having access to one’s mobile phone physically, or due to the loss of battery power or signal. Technophobia, on the other hand, is the fear of advanced technology or complex devices. These phobias demonstrate extreme opposing views on technology, and given how dependent upon technology we have become, I find this arena of research not only fascinating, but necessary.
Qualitative methods will be extremely useful in studying this topic area, as qualitative measures are descriptive and so is the causation behind people’s fears. The first supporting qualitative research article I found, “A Study on Technophobia and Mobile Device Design,” utilized one-on-one questionnaires and focus groups collect information on individual’s phobias. Our text states this method is best used to “obtain more detailed and rich data about personal experiences, events, and behaviors” (Malec and Newman, 2013 2.1). This type of study can be categorized as a phenomenological study—one that focuses on a person’s perception of an experience (i.e. fear). Another study conducted by Yildirim and Correia (2015) utilized focused interviews in their first phase of research. “Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample from the population to gain a thorough understanding of the dimensions of nomophobia based on the lived experiences of the interviewees” (Yildirim and Correia, 2015, p. 131). This study also used a phenomenological method, collecting information through personal narratives.
The second study utilized the information collected through qualitative measures to create quantitative methods for additional research. Using a mixed methods approach strengthened the findings of the study, whereas the study by Ha, Page, and Thorsteinsson (2011) concluded their study on just qualitative measures. I believe my study will benefit from a similar mixed methods approach. People’s fears are personal, so interviews would be best to first understand why people are afraid (qualitative). Then, quantitative measures could be used to understand the physiological responses to those fears.
