Briefly describe the particular qualitative research approach/methodology utilized in each of the two articles you selected (e.g. case study, ethnographic study, phenomenological study, etc.).

In the research that was conducted for Mexican mothers and their children, the research study showed, “The present study seeks to understand how Mexican immigrant mothers manage private information with adolescent children activating the state of emotional parentification. ‘Emotional parentificiation’ occurs when there is a role reversal between parent and adolescent where the child is prematurely given adult responsibilities in the family and provides emotional support to parents. Sixteen Mexican immigrant mothers participated in individual interviews and as a result of the thematic analysis, three themes were identified: (1) adolescent children serving as a reluctant confidant, (2) adolescent children becoming a deliberate confidant, and (3) adolescent children employing confidant privacy rule strategies” (Shin, 2019). As the quote states, they interviewed the parents. They also do look at a specific topic within Mexican immigrant parents and their children. They use this to find a deeper meaning into Mexican Immigration In particular what is examined is within an Ethnography or, “examine human society and various cultural groups” ().

For the next research study, they look at people who are suffering from Bipolar Disorder. “This study aimed to understand the challenges people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience and examine what these challenges imply for health care and research needs. Methods Two qualitative studies were used, one to formulate research needs and another to formulate healthcare needs. In both studies focus group discussions were conducted with patients to explore their challenges in living with BD and associated needs, focusing on the themes diagnosis, treatment and recovery” (Maassen, 2018). What they specifically look at is a phenomenological study, which is a study that looks at a specific experience and their understandings of it. Specifically, they look at the experience of having BD and how healthcare works for them. They use focus groups to examine the patients.

Compare and contrast the two qualitative methods used:
What is the same and what is different and why?

From what I can tell, they both look at cultures and specific groups but a phenomenological study specifically looks at certain experiences in which not all cultures or people can experience. They also use interviews. The second research study was a focus group setting and the first one was especially individual studies.

Does either methods seem a good fit to explore your topic of interest?

I think an ethnography would work very well within a gamer culture. It would allow me to go into a group of gamers, play the games, and become “one of the gamers” this would set the mood and allow me to understand from a certain perspective. I do not personally play first-person shooters which are associated with gun violence, so it might work well playing with gamers who especially play those types of games. The phenomenological study might not work well because everyone will experience violent video games at some point. It is not a completely different experience or one of a kind. If I looked at shooting a gun for the first time it might. Possibly comparing video gun handling and real-life handling.
