Ashford University Investigation of the Cylinder & Sorting Shapes Discussion THERE ARE TWO SEPARATE ACTIVITIES FOR THIS DISCUSSIONPlease view the attachment for instructions and upload two separate word documents for each activityYOU WILL NEED TO CUT OUT THE SHAPES AND TAKE PICTURES OF THEM AS PART OF THE DISCUSISON ANSWER Discussion Post_June 27:
Activity 1: Sorting Shapes
• For this activity you will need to build some 3D solids. You can find 6 solids in the
documents for June 27: 3D Shapes. You will need to print each of these pages and cut
the shapes out. Then you will need to fold and tape them. Note: It may be best to leave
these shapes open so that you can fill them up later.
• Using the 3D shapes, sort them into 2 groups.
• What attribute did you use to sort them?
• Find another way to sort them. (You can sort into 2 groups or more than 2 groups)
• What attribute did you use to sort this time?
For the discussion post, take pictures of your 2 different ways of sorting and describe the
attribute that you used to sort each time.
Activity 2: Investigation of the Cylinder
• Use a piece of paper (most computer paper measures 8.5” x 11”) to create two
cylinders: The “Hotdog” Cylinder and the “Hamburger” Cylinder, created as the pictures
show below. Tape to another piece of card stock so that you could fill these up with rice
or beans or something else that will fill up a container.
“Hotdog” Cylinder
“Hamburger” Cylinder
• Before you actually fill one up, Predict: Which container holds more the hotdog cylinder
or the hamburger cylinder or will they hold the same amount? You must commit before
testing.
• Then, actually fill one up with rice, dried beans or small cubes to determine if your
prediction is correct.
– Note: You could pour one into the other rather than counting units.
For the discussion post, take a picture of your “Hotdog” Cylinder and your “Hamburger”
Cylinder side by side. Then answer the questions:
• Which one is bigger? Were you surprised? Was your prediction correct?
