and Social Media

Think of a relative/friend/mentor who is elderly and just getting introduced to social media. As
someone from a younger generation, you have more experience than they have with social
media and you can act as a guide.
The number of older Americans joining social media is growing every day. This trend is of
interest to many researchers because senior citizens are a demographic group with
characteristics that are distinct from the other younger demographic groups. Many senior
citizens are new to technology and are just being introduced to it. In addition, the world that they
grew up in is dramatically from the world that we live in now.
Some experts encourage social media use by senior citizens, listing numerous benefits such as
the ability to stay connected with friends and family and the opportunity to learn new hobbies.
However, as we have seen in class, social media can also have a negative impact. In addition
to the issues that affect all demographic groups, senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to
certain aspects of social media.
For this assignment, you will choose to either support or oppose the following viewpoint:
Social media use is beneficial for senior citizens.
1. Choose a side
Your first step is to decide whether you will support or oppose the statement above. If you aren’t
sure which side to take, you may want to do some research first before deciding. Once you
have decided, continue researching and then write your essay.
For this essay, you should focus on advantages or disadvantages of social media that are
especially relevant to the senior citizen demographic (rather than issues that affect all
demographic groups). You will want to build your essay by bringing up the 3 most compelling
issues (or more if you would like) that support your viewpoint. Describe each issue in enough
detail for your essay to be self-contained and for your reader to understand the issues in depth.
Then, explain how each issue supports your viewpoint.
2. Choose an ethical theory
You will need to choose an ethical theory that will act as the lens for the entire essay. If you
choose the supporting side, you will apply the ethical theory to justify why the issues you chose
are beneficial. Similarly, if you choose the opposing side, you will apply the ethical theory to
justify why the issues you chose are harmful.
3. Resources
To help you get started, I have provided some links to articles below. You may use (and cite)
the articles listed below for your essay but you must find more supporting evidence. Make sure
you can find and cite at least three credible news articles in your essay.
