ASSIGNMENTS FOR WEEK 11 (week of October 28, 2019)
ITEM 1: Read Chapter 12 –Managing Diversity and take Quiz 12 by Thursday at midnight.
Key Point in Chapter 12-Diversity included:
1. In the United States we are living in a much more diverse society than several
generations ago, and both our customer’s demographics and our workers are more
diverse. Therefore, to gain the maximum benefit from diversity, we as business
managers need to better understand diversity and how to manage diversity in the
workplace.
2. Diversity simply means ‘differences’. These differences can be things that are
observable (Surface Level Diversity) such as age, gender, ethnicity, height, weight, etc.;
or things that we cannot see (Deep Level Diversity) such as personality differences,
attitudes, skills, education, beliefs, and values.
Deep Level Diversity characteristics can only be learned through interaction with
individuals. Both levels of Diversity are important to understand and have in
organizations, as they strengthen an organization, and better equips the organization to
serve a diverse customer base.
3. Due primarily to historical unequal and/or unfair treatment of some groups of people
by U.S. companies, the U.S. Government has enacted laws prohibit discrimination in the
workplace based on age, gender, ethicality, handicaps, and other characteristics.
These types of laws fall under the umbrella of Discrimination Laws and for a period of
time in the U.S. there have been a series of Affirmative Action laws that attempted to
correct prior mistreatment of minorities and others.
4. Executive Managers are responsible for promoting diversity throughout their
organizations through employee training on the value of diversity and how to deal with
a diverse workforce; and through open hiring practices and supportive diversity polices.

ITEM 4: Discussion Board Part 1-Diversity
Arkansas State University has a very diverse student body.
If you look at Surface-Level Diversity characteristics, we have students from many
different countries and cultures (Chinese, Indian, South African, French, Japanese,
German, Vietnamese, Australian, Saudi Arabian, and many others). We also have
young students and old students, as well as males and females.
At the Deep Level of Diversity, ASU has both traditional (attending college immediately
after high school), and non-traditional (attending college later in life), and those from
various socio-economic backgrounds, different work histories, different skill sets, different
personalities, etc.
How have you benefited from ASU’s diverse student body? (Look at both surface-level
and deep level diversity)?
Would you prefer a more diverse student body or one that is more homogenous? Why?
Post your responses to these questions on Week 11 Discussion Board as your initial post.
Comment on the posts of at least three other students indicating where you might
agree or disagree and why.
Complete your final post with some things that you learned from the other students
about diversity and its value.
