John Doe grew up in a poor family on Chicago’s west side. When he was just 17 he had to drop out of
school to help his family make money. At 12, John was dealing drugs. At 16, John was incarcerated.
Today, John is the CEO of one of the largest marketing firms in the U.S. In a recent article, Dr. Roh, a
Sociologist from Rome University, argued that people’s success is determined in large part by their
upbringing in life. This begs the question: With John’s poor upbringing, how did he go on to be 50
successful? The answer is John’s strong personality and drive to succeed. People’s personalities and
internal motivations are often overlooked in discussions about social mobility and success. Personality is
a strong determining factor in whether or not one succeeds.
John Doe is just one example of this truth. There are countless others. For example, if you ask Jeff Bezos,
the CEO of amazon, to what he attributes all of his success, his answer is simple: “A drive to succeed.”
Bezos says, “I wasn’t always the smartest kid in school. I didn’t get the best grades. Other kids had more
privileges than I did. The diffefence was that I worked harder than everyone, every day, all the time.” A5
Bezos paints out, his wealth didn’t come to him via his parents or others in his family. It was the result of
sheer hard work,
The research on success bears this truth out as well. According to a recent Gallup survey of those who
earn more than 10 million dollars a year, over 70% attribute their wealth and success to hard work, grit,
and determination, not social status or upbringing.
While social upbringing inevitably plays some role in whether or not one is successful and wealthy, this
is not the sole determining factor. As we have seen, personality and hard work are what really make
people succeed. These things outweigh social status and upbringing, as is evidenced by research and the
testimony of some of the most successful people in the world.
