PSY 120 Grossmont College Nature versus Nurture Discussion Thesis: On March 23rd, 2020, the Nth room case became known. The Nth room case is a digital
sexual crime case that happened on a social media chat called Telegram from 2018 to 2020 in
South Korea. In the chatting room, there are a lot of pornography of sexual expoitation and the
number of the users is over 240 thousands. Because we live in a sociotechnical system where it
is difficult or even impossible to identify a single human or mechanical case, committing a crime
would be less costly or would even be no price. With this trait, there will be a huge amount of
co-criminals, pushing the victims into a situation that it’s hard for them to seek help and justice.
As a result, the trait of anonymity would exaggerate people’s dark side of the mind and increase
the rate of cyber crime.
Outline:
● Write about the highlight of the whole case.
○ Elaborate on the case: what does Nth room mean? How can people get
involved? Etc.
■ If you want to become a member for more videos, you must also share
some porn videos.
○ The background of the operator of the Nth room: Doctor of computer science.
■ High education crime.
○ In 2019, a person tried to call the police but ended up being ignored.
■ Why? Is it a possibility that some police are members of the Nth room?
● Resee: the power of the Internet has a lot of dark sides that would be easier for people
to commit a crime.
○ criminal’s perspective: easier for people to commit a crime, but they should not.
Is it because of the low cost of cyber crime leading to 240 thousands users .
○ victim’s perspective: although the internet is a place where everyone can make
their own voice, however, what if the sacrifices are their treasured things? For
example, the earliest porn in the Nth room case is the female college students
who need money and went to a model company for living. They were asked to
take uncovered photos. They treasured these photos and did not want to make it
publicly seen by everyone. Another thing is that what if the group of criminals is
extremely larger than the victim group so there is a possibility that there is
nowhere to seek help.
We are taught to be rational. However, when people are in the crowd, they tend to forget
rationality, moralities and even laws and treat what crowd’s idea as the right thing.
