“Hub and Spoke” Model.
Authors Name: MINCULETE, Gheorghe; OLAR, Polixenia
Source: Valahian Journal of Economic Studies. 2014, Vol. 5 Issue 2, p21-32. 12p.
Read out the research paper carefully and based on your understanding you should answer the
following questions.
Questions:
1. Why in in the current modern trade, the integration of economic affairs from design to
completion is an important priority to every Manufacturing Companies?
2. Define the parties involved directly and indirectly in supply chain and their role for smooth
running of business?
The Answer should be within 2- 3 pages in length including the cover and appendices.
You can take any company of your choice as an example reference should be included.
Question One
In the current setting, the integration of different economic issues from the start of the designing
process up until completion plays a vital role in companies that are engaged in manufacturing. In that
way, a company has the ability to meet the needs of the consumers and also ensure that there is client
loyalty. One way in which the integration of economic affairs is achieved through the incorporation of
the hub and spokes model in the process of supply delivery chain. Notably, a company tries to achieve
operational and economic efficiency in its supply chain by working to reduce the costs (Minculete &
Olar, 2014). Using this model, the company uses a central distribution point, which saves time and
money in the manner that the goods reach the consumer. As well, many organizations ensure that the
“hub” is located in a strategic location in terms of the geography to ensure cost-effectiveness.
One organization that has employed the use of the “hub and spokes model” in supply chain
management is FedEx (Bowen, 2012). It is one of the largest companies that deals with delivery
services, and hence its business model is based on having an effective supply chain management. Short
of that, the firm will face the danger of incurring huge losses. The choice of FedEx to adopt the use of
the hub and spokes model is guided by the need to use the company resources efficiently. That is
because the firm relies on a single hub to distribute many parcels over vast distances. Even so, some
assert that the use of the hub and spoke model creates the possibility of congestion at the hub and hence
lead to inconvenience. As well, it will result in an increase in the cost associated with keeping the
supply chain operational. Due to that, FedEx has taken steps to ensure that such a scenario does not
occur. That is by ascertaining that there is efficient pickup, consolidation, and sorting of parcels before
they are delivered. In that way, FedEx enables manufacturing companies to meet the need of the
consumers.
Question Two
Different parties are directly involved in the supply chain. To start with, there is the raw
material supplier who is engaged in the production of the raw materials that are used in the process of
manufacturing of the product destined for the consumer. Then there are manufacturers who are
involved in the process of making goods for the market. Next, it is the distributors who are tasked with
moving the products from the warehouse of the manufacturers to the retailer (Minculete & Olar, 2014).
In this instance, the distributors must make sure that the movement of goods is efficient and hence
reduce costs and save time. In the absence of that, the parties that are involved in supply chain
management will incur losses. After that, there are retailers who are also one of the most vital parts of
supply chain management. Retailers ensure that the products from the manufacturer reach the
consumer. The retailer will dictate the manner the supply chain operates. If the goods are moving fast,
then the manufacturer will make more products.
Apart from the above, there are other parties that are indirectly involved in the supply chain,
for instance, the service providers. These are the organizations that offer services to the producers,
retailers, raw material suppliers, and distributors. Without their contribution, the parties that have been
mentioned above would not be able to operate efficiently. As well, the government is also involved
indirectly in the supply chain. That is because it sets the policies that guide how all of the actors in the
supply chain conduct their business, for instance, the level of taxation.
