The Healthcare industry is a complex industry that pulls together resources from an
economy to ensure that health services are provided to all citizens. The provision of health care
by the professionals in this industry is affected by many factors, both internal and external. The
external factors are those that influence the external business environment, and health care
providers have no direct control over it. The nursing profession, for instance, is faced by many
external challenges that may need the government and other stakeholders to come together and
address it. The influences can be positive or negative.
The positive factors include:
Technological improvement- has brought a positive impact on the healthcare service
provision by nurses. The nursing profession has become an enjoyable occupation because of the
simplicity that is brought about by technology. Machines have replaced the previously tedious
activities that nurses used to perform. Although essential services like caring for patients haven’t
changed much, other services like monitoring of patient’s general performance are done by a
computer. The nurse’s work is to monitor the changes in the network anywhere in the hospital
without having to be with the patient physically. This ensures efficiency by the nurses.
Advanced technology- helps in ensuring that massive patient data is captured and can
be easily retrieved in a computer. Hence, this action has reduced the time spent by nurses in
going through and analyzing patient’s information, which is time-consuming. All these
technological advantages have led to an improvement in the working environment of nurses. It
has also reduced accidents that come about as a result of fatigue. Also, many nurses have been
hired to provide services, and therefore, it has ensured an increase in employment opportunities.

Another positive external influence that can impact the nursing profession is the
increased funding by the government. Whenever the government increases funding for hiring
nurses, many of the unemployed nurses secure jobs. Similarly, laws passed by the government
can have a direct effect on workforce needs by nurses in a healthcare facility. Favorable
government policies and regulations affecting nurses can be given. For example, laws touching
on the number of hours that nurses are required to work can affect the profession massively. Few
working hours and labor division strategies passed by a government, for instance, improves the
overall working environment for the nurses and motivates them to work efficiently.
Another external factor is the patient characteristics and demographics. Changes in
the overall status of the population can have a massive impact on the provision of the services by
nurses and can also impact on the way they provide services. A drastic increase in the number of
middle-income earners in a country implies that many people will afford a dissent health care
service. Also, many people will afford an insurance cover for their medication. Therefore, many
nurses will be recruited to provide various services to the population. Increased funding also
implies that healthcare providers will have an income increase and better living standards.
The market power in a country can have a positive influence on a workforce in the
health care sector. A massive market in an economy and higher gross income per head implies
higher spending by health care service providers. Nurses, for instance, can get an increase in
revenue, and others can have opportunities to further their studies to serve the ever-increasing
number of people needing their services. Consolidations and mergers also emerge in the health
care industry, where hospitals merge to provide high-quality services to people. In this case, the
primary beneficiaries will be the health care service providers like the nurses will reap from
it.

Another positive external influence is the support of non-governmental and
charity organizations. These organizations pump a large chunk of money into healthcare
facilities for payment of salaries to workers, training of personnel, purchasing of equipment, and
facility improvements (Robson, 2016). World bodies like the United Nations also provide
funding independently to these healthcare facilities. Therefore, nurses will be in an excellent
position to take advantage of the increased funding to get trained and at the same time, get an
increment in their wages. Thus, they provide high-quality services to the health care industry.
There are also some of the negative factors that influence workforce needs in
services delivery. Bad leadership in the part of the government can negatively affect services
provided by nurses. Repressive laws that are passed by the government can negatively influence
service delivery by nurses. Union leadership wrangles affect the nursing profession adversely
because their grievances will not be addressed in time due to a lack of an intermediary between
them and the government. Their union leaders have been tasked with championing for the
nurse’s rights, and whenever there is incompetence on the part of the leaders, nurses will suffer
because there is no one addressing their concerns (Scully, 2015). Therefore, it negatively affects
service delivery.
Another negative external influence is the changes in the external operating
environment of the health care facility. The main challenge is a demographic change.
Immigration and emigration can have drastic effects on health care services delivery by saying
nurses, for instance. When people migrate from an area, demand for services by nurses reduces.
The low patient number implies that few nurses are hired and also reduced financing. The
reduction in funding can have a negative impact because many nurses can be laid off, and others

experience a wage reduction. This negatively affects the services provided by the nurses and can
also make them inefficient and incompetent in their profession.
Competition from privately owned health care facilities can also hurt the overall
performance of nurses in their profession. Private health care facilities employ highly qualified
and experienced nurses (Thomas, 2016). They also pay huge wages and have many other
incentives and bonuses to motivate their workers. Therefore, whenever these private
organizations require personnel, they ‘’poach” from other facilities that pay lower wages to their
employees. Subsequently, this negatively action affects the lesser health care facility because it
will lose qualified and experienced personnel and in the long run, affect the morale and
efficiency of the existing workforce that is in the health care facility.
Another external negative influence is the cost of purchasing equipment and drugs.
Health facilities are required to buy high-quality equipment and drugs for their facilities. When
the value of these equipment goes up, internal adjustments are made as a remedy to the costs that
have been incurred in the purchase of these equipment. Usually, wage reduction is the most
viable option. Nurses are deducted their salaries to cover for the expenses incurred. This,
therefore, negatively affects the health care delivery and services provided by nurses. Because of
lower wages with no incentives, the nurses lack morale in delivering health care services and at
the same time, they become incompetent an inefficient in the provision of their services.
Inadequate personnel can have a negative impact also on the performance of nurses in a
health care facility. Government regulations can impact negatively the qualifications that are
required to specialize in a particular profession like nursing. Higher entry grades set by
government implies that fewer people will be able to concentrate on the business. When few
people specialize in nursing, for instance, hospitals will lack enough personnel required for

services provision. Therefore, the few that have been hired will become overworked. Ultimately,
this leads to fatigue among the nurses and can negatively affect their overall performance leading
to inefficient services provision.
