Essay Question:
In the Sixteenth Century, Sir Thomas More coined the term utopia to signify an imaginary society of harmony and happiness. More’s utopia was an indirect attack on the ills of English society under Henry VIII. Throughout history many philosophers also joined Thomas More’s debate on how to create the ultimate Utopian society. Who are the philosophers and how did they vary in the way they constructed their Utopian society? Do you believe it is possible to have a Utopian society in today’s world? Why or why not? Has a Utopian society ever been created, was it successful, or why did if fail? If you were able to create a Utopian society, what would your society look like, what would be its goals and rules, and how would you prevent it from failing?
