The discipline of anthropology has traditionally been interested in observing and analyzing the
actions of in non-western societies, but their insights are equally valuable when trying to understand ou
own culture. Your assignment is to write a 4 to 5 page essay that describes and critiques some aspect of
our society before placing it in the context of our culture. This essay asks you to spend an hour or two
observing some scene that depicts everyday life in contemporary America and then analyzing the social
interactions and cultural functions underlying what you observe. You can opt to observe a workplace,
restaurant, store, religious site, sporting event, or any other example of everyday life in which social
interactions take place. You should spend the first third of your paper describing in as much detail as
possible exactly what you see, hear, and otherwise experience during your observation with the goal of
conveying as much info as possible to the reader. Remember to COUNT key numbers and pay attention
to QUANTATATIVE as well as qualitative experiences. After this you should spend the bulk of your paper
trying to step back to analyze the social interactions you observe to suggest what you think might be the
motivations and meanings that different people associate with their everyday social interactions. Make
sure to consider issues of gender, ethnicity, and ECONOMIC INEQUALITY. The final section of your paper
should be an attempt to explain what you describe and analyze in terms of broad contemporary cultural
trends, to show how what you have examined fits into the larger culture. You should also attempt to
write a series of increasingly complex conclusions that indicate how what you discover matches your
initial assumptions entering your observations, how your discoveries reflect on or fit into the larger
American culture, and how your views on the activities you detailed may have changed over the course
of researching and writing this essay. You will be graded on the quality of your ideas and writing overall.
