Fifth One Thought Paper on Zoroastrianism
It is remarkable how much one religion can change throughout history leading up to
today. At first thought when learning about Zoroastrianism I thought to myself, how could this
possible be classified as a major religion? There are very few people in relation to the world
population that claims to be Zoroastrian. As I learned more it made more sense. This religion
played a larger role in the past and influenced so many throughout the Persian Empires.
Part of me wonders if the Persians were not so great and powerful past, if Zoroastrianism
would even be classified as a major religion. It sounds as though the Aryans were very forceful
with their culture and way of life, pretty much forcing it on others as they conquered them.
Perhaps that is why there is also so much disconnect and disagreement throughout religious
scholars today? There is not a whole lot of evidence to support even the foundational beliefs and
fundamentals of this religion. Word of mouth only goes so far as to provide a detailed history of
Zoroastrianism. I believe this is also why there are a few parallels between them and other
religions, like Verethra and Vriti.
One thing in particular I find fascinating is the evolution of Mithra. The idea, or perhaps
fact, that the stars in the sky were his many eyes sounds so powerful and surreal. Kinda reminds
me of how God, from Christianity and Judaism, is all seeing and all knowing. I always enjoy
learning of the different gods, or in this case the Daevas and Ahuras.

Zoroastrianism
After going through Zoroastrianism lectures and videos, there is one thing that
sticks out to me that is the most interesting. Which is Angra Mainyu and Ahura Mazda.
Human beings are created by Ahura Mazda and are supposed to follow all of the laws
by Ahura Mazda. They are to be good to people and good will come of themselves. Just
like Karma, even though it is stated that “there is no karma to build up and hold a soul to
a body”. But you do good, you will get good in return. But if these people do not abide
by the laws of Ahura Mazda, you will have to serve Angra Mainyu; the evil spirit of the
two.
They say you have to follow the laws of Ahura Mazda, but you can rebel but the
outcome is to serve Angra Mainyu. This is so interesting to me because it is pretty much
giving the people a free range to do whatever they want to do. Letting them do what
they want, and showing them the consequence. Usually people do not get the privilege
of knowing what will happen to them when they do something bad. So I find that pretty
interesting. Also considering that they know that they will have to serve Angra Mainyu,
why would these people not abide by the laws and follow the rules? It is said that Angra
Mainyu inflicts harm on people. Why would you want that? You know what is going to
happen to you, so why would you put yourself into that kind of situation? The harm that
Angra Mainyu will inflict on you is famine, disease, and death. You don’t abide by Ahura
Mazdas law, you will end up with a horrible disease, and die. I get it everyone dies, but
not all consequences end up in death. So what I find the most interesting is people
knowing what will turn up of their actions of not abiding by these laws, and still continue
to stray away from Ahura Mazda.
People really do not understand how good they really have it. How hard is it to
resist temptation and be good and follow the rules that are set out for them. I would not
want to break one simple law just to end up with a terrible disease and die. So it baffles
me that people do this.
What I found most confusing about this religion was the life after death. There is
no end to life, your life just keeps going on and on. There are just different stages in
existence. They say that the bridge is an easy path to heaven but the souls of evil it is a
narrow edge like a knife causing them to fall to perdition which is a state of eternal
punishment. They say that souls can continue to make progress after death. What is
this progress? Since they are not living anymore, what else do they have to do? I do not
find this part easy to understand. But another part I find interesting is that with the
perdition your sould will be cleansed and everyone will come together in a transformed
world. I like this because there is hope for even the evil and wicked in their afterlife.
ONE THOUGHT PAPERS
The papers are graded on the thoughtfulness of the students’ observations and question(s). They are not meant
for a student to simply repeat what he or she has learned on that religion or topic; no summaries. Rather, the student is to write about what
he or she finds the most interesting or most problematic and why. Students may also write questions on what they are learning, perhaps
on a topic not covered by the textbook or in class. Questions are limited to a maximum of two.
Rules for the One Thought Papers
If a paper is so poorly written (bad spelling, grammar or syntax), or merely a duplication of the contents of a textbook, then
it will receive 0 points
If a paper is submitted that has problems when it comes to spelling, grammar or syntax, but it is still readable, a percentage
of the grade will be deducted appropriate to that paper. So proofread your papers, use your spell checkers and grammar
checkers, etc.
Examples of point deductions: Not capitalizing proper names, such as typing ‘bible’ instead of ‘Bible,’ ‘christianity’ instead of
“Christianity, etc. Proper paragraphs rather than a single paragraph covering an entire page. Making certain that the use of ‘?” is at
the end of an actual question. Unless you are writing about the deity of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, it should be ‘god’ or ‘gods.’
Remember that sentences that do not have a subject or a verb, are incomplete sentences at best.
If a student consistently ignores proofreading his or her papers, etc., the penalties will increase each time.
If a student submits a One Thought Paper and doesn’t include his or her name, the penalty is 20 points.
No late One Thought Papers will be accepted. Not being aware of emails, announcements or messages concerning One Thought
Papers are not valid excuses for not submitting.
Do not wait until the last moment to submit your paper, it might not make it on time! Plus, if a student has plans during the term, e.g.,
a vacation, that will not allow them to have access to the internet, no makeups for One Thought papers will be allowed.
Papers that are not single-spaced will be penalized by 10 points
Do not use PAGES, Google docs, WordPerfect or any of the open source’ versions of Word, WordPerfect or Office.
Do not submit your paper as a zip file or within a folder; just submit the document.
If a paper is considered frivolous, derogatory toward a religion or merely statements of faith (confessional), that paper will
not receive credit.
If the paper is merely a summary of what a student has learned, that paper will not receive credit.
Do not consider these papers as to be some sort of mini-research papers. They are informal reflections on what you are learning.
If students have submitted 60% or less of the One Thought Papers, then the One Thought Papers will become 30% of their
final grade, with the five exams reduced to 55% of the final course grade.
Do not use your phone to submit your One Thought Papers, because your submission might fail completely or partially.
Papers are due before 11:00 PM on the final due date.
NO WORD COUNT; remember they are ‘one thought papers.
