ENVS 3032 CU Boulder Potential Environmental and Health Effects of Fracking Paper This question is a strict Op-ed piece that needs to follow the instructions that are linked below. In the attachment you will see instructions and guidelines as well as links to help with the Op ed. Below are the instructions for this assignment. This must be followed and aim to be
creative. The topic will be anything you choose about fracking and living hazards in the
area such as water contamination, earthquakes etc.
Project Overview
This project will help you practice being a producer of effective media messages
for advocacy! Much of what we have been working on so far has focused on helping you
to examine media messages and considering what makes them work, how they
accomplish their goals, and what is behind their creation. You will now take the skills you
have been developing to the next level through the creation of an advocacy project using
the tools we have been exploring.
The goal is for you to use your creative abilities and match these with steps for
action. As you have seen, skillful messaging is one of the best ways to reach a wide
audience to affect perceptions and guide action. The information you have gathered
towards your essay project should help you in crafting this project. You can pick a new
topic and focus, but I highly recommend you use the same topic if you can to save time
and to build on the fact that social science and ethnography can be useful starting points
(and often are) for crafting effective media advocacy campaigns.
The aims for this project are as follows:
•To practice using the tools of critical media studies to effect change in the
context of the environment and society.
•To focus deeply on and learn more about an area of personal interest and
curiosity.
•To practice using your media studies knowledge practically through the creation
of a public outreach project of your choosing.
•To use your creative abilities and interests to support action for or education
around a cause you believe in.
•To share your work and insights with your peers, receive feedback and enjoy
each other’s creative efforts.
*******Professional Style Media Article or Op-ed – For this option you will write a
well-crafted op-ed opinion piece or article based on your project topic. This is different
from the analytical essay you are writing for the final! The goal here is that you consider
popular reading, which rarely says things like “according to Marxist or cultural analysis…”
but rather shows these ideas through evocation, convincing arguments and evidence,
and audience specific metaphors. If you choose this option, the submission should be
750-1000 words in length, well written and edited, and well researched. If you choose
this option, you must identify a newspaper or popular blog in your project plan that you
would like to submit to. Model your work around this target and consider your audience
carefully. I suggest you try submitting your piece to this outlet if you like your results!
Note, because this is shorter writing and is perhaps the least ambitious of the options, I
will be a bit picky during grading to see that you really paid attention to the details. That
said, if you’re called to pick this option, do so! Articles are essential resources for media
advocacy.
