Use the Internet to research companies that utilize external recruiting processes. Next, based
on your research and the case study at the end of Ch. 5, determine two (2) advantages and two
(2) disadvantages of using electronic recruitment resources over traditional resources (paper

Watch the YouTube video linked in this week’s Business News tab for additional insight.

“Designing Pay Structures” Please respond to the following:
From the case in Chapter 8, assume that John Shurtman has hired you as his human resource
consultant. Analyze the objectives for the new sales representative at United Fleet Service
(UFS) and determine whether or not John’s decision to hire a new sales consultant would
significantly benefit the business at this time. Provide support for your response.
Determine three (3) factors you would consider in developing a compensation plan for the new
sales representative that will provide enough incentive to both secure new sales and develop
relationships with current customers. Justify your response.

As Hite and Seitz (2016) show in Chapter 3: Food, there is enough food produced and available
to feed the entire world every day. However, for various reasons, millions still go hungry,
making food security—having consistent access to adequate nutritional food—a persistent
global social problem in both developing and developed countries.
Where do most of the world’s hungry live?
What are two causes of hunger and two problems that result?
What are some potential consequences and benefits to using biotechnologies in developing
countries? Based on the research currently available, should developing countries pursue the
use of biotechnologies? Why or why not?

When we explore the concept of internal recruiting, we are really examining opportunities for
current employees to progress up or laterally within the organization. From the organization’s
perspective, selecting current employees to fill new requirements allows the organization to get
a known performer quickly into a critical position. When we examine internal recruiting, we
also must consider the effect of this staffing action on employee retention.
Discuss how employee mobility differs from traditional upward mobility in organizations with
alternative mobility paths (Exhibit 6.2). How would you describe mobility and career
progression in your current or former employment (Exhibits 6.1 and 6.2)?

In your own words, briefly describe how mobility effects employee retention/turnover.
“Discretionary and Legally Required Benefits” Please respond to the following:
Discuss whether or not you believe that discretionary employee benefits should be an
entitlement or earned based on performance. Justify your response.
Select two (2) legally required benefits and explain why it is necessary for the law to require
these benefits for employees. Next, debate whether or not you believe these laws are fair for
both employers and employees. Provide support for your response.

As Hite and Seitz (2016) discuss in Chapter 8: Technology, technological advancements and
changes may affect how we can work to find solutions for the global threats discussed so far.
Technological advances can and do affect development in positive and negative ways.
Besides biotechnology, identify one technology that seems to have the greatest potential
positive effect on food security. Discuss any potential negative uses of that technology. Do the
benefits of these technologies outweigh the potential negative consequences they have on
food security? Why or why not?
