thoughts and feelings
An anthology by Student Author
Introduction
In preparation of the anthology, my opinion on poetry drastically changed. When I heard
we had a unit about poetry, the first thing that popped into my head was “boring” but as
we wrote our first poem I came into realization. I like poetry. I started to understand how
it’s an amazing way to express yourself. There was one fear I had at first. Not being
creative. I thought “I’m not creative enough to write poetry, I’m not going to be able to
write anything” but once I got my keyboard my mind was blown about how I was able to
think so fast, everything just flowed. It even came to the point where I would write
personal poetry in my free time.
Writing these personal poems was easy for me. I loved how easy it was to express
myself. I took it as a place to vent to. I loved how poetry was simple yet complicated. All
the poems in this anthology are my favorite ones because of how much thought I put
into them.
The first poem is called blue Morpho it’s about my experience at the fair. I wrote it about
this memory because this memory is very meaningful to me, it was the very first big
family trip. It meant a lot to me, so I found it genuinely easy to write about it. When I was
writing the poem I decided to try something new and try to rhyme so I did. I thought it
would of been harder but I genuinely thought it was quite easy. The second poem is
called powerful flower, it’s about who I am as a person, this poem was a little more
difficult to do because I couldn’t think of specific words to describe me. During this
process I realized who I am as a person. I tried to think of positive words but I realized I
am very vengeful so I kept it unfortunately. The third poem is called vivid paint it’s about
what poetry means and is to me. I wrote this poem once I started liking poetry. As I was
writing it, I thought to myself, “this isn’t bad at all” I loved how you could write in different
ways. One thing that I struggled with was finding metaphors but this was the first poem
we ever wrote, over time I improved.
Table of contents:
1. Blue morpho
2. Powerful flower
3. Vivid paint
Blue morpho
Elephants stomping on your chest
Your heart beat getting faster and faster
The screams
The screams that sound terrifying yet joyful
the lights oh so colorful
The beauty of being at the top
D
R
O
P
everything goes black as you close your eyes
It hit you by surprise
the wonderful scents
as you look to see the carnival tents
Joy is in the air
Everyone has some to spare
Lights flashing
Blue red and white
As the little kids scream in fright
The taste of the Carmel apple
Tangy and sweet
Starring up to see the ride and all you can see is feet
Waiting in line
Time goes by slow but steady
My mom told me it’s almost our turn, hurry and get ready
Butterflies
My favorite kind are the ones that are black and blue but in this case I don’t like them at all
Powerful flower
They might say that they are as though as a diamond
Graphene
Dyneema
But
I do not
I am a flower in the middle of a field
A field that is very active
a flower that has never been exposed to another flower
But yet always exposed to the stuff the field goes through
Always losing its petals but never giving up
The more pedals I lose the more I adapt to this feeling
This feeling of falling apart
Being hurt
The more petals I lose the less fragile and stronger I get
More powerful
I am a tiger trying to protect my children
My feelings
I will attack
At that moment my heart freezes
becoming cold hearted
My wish is to make them see their error
Revenge is what I seek
I am a bear and revenge is golden sticky honey
I am vengeful
Vivid paint
Poetry is vivid colors
Poetry is like the moment you are born and the bright vivid colors are coming
nearer and are reaching for your sight
Poetry is about envisioning your purpose and reasoning of seeing the light
the light that’s never been introduced to you
Poetry is as important as your desire to find that purpose
If you don’t find that purpose it will just be as simple as black and white
With no explanation
just there
Poetry is as pointless as riding a roller coaster without the excitement
Without excitement what’s the point of riding the roller coaster?
Poetry means realization and wakening, that wakening of that sense you have
just came upon
Poetry is paint
The paint you use in a painting
A painting in which you use to express yourself
Written reflection:
Writing this anthology helped me think outside the box, using metaphors helped me
become more creative, which I never used to be able to do. Which is why I feared not
being able to write poetry. My opinion about poetry drastically changed once I actually
wrote some. I loved how it was an amazing way to express yourself from the beginning.
I would’ve never thought I found poetry interesting or even fun. It came to the point
where I wrote poetry about more personal stuff on my free time. I used to think that
poetry made no sense and was literally pointless I would be like “why would anyone
want to be a poet” but it all makes sense now. I wouldn’t necessarily say I would
become one but what I do agree with is how people enjoy writing it, which truly does
blow my Mind because of how my opinion changed.
Some advice I would give other 9th graders is to just go with the flow and to try it out,
poetry is boring if you make it boring. If you think about it way too hard it’s gonna end up
being boring or hard but it’s really not. Obviously it’s going to take a thought process but
don’t make it hard for yourself. Poetry really is great once you try it out. I personally
believe it’s a great way to express yourself, I love how it’s so simple yet complicated
which sounds confusing but it will all make sense once you write some and understand
it. Poetry might not make sense at times but at the end of the day there’s always a
meaning behind it you just need to understand the meaning.
Here are the instructions for the booklet and there is also another file attached as an
example on how this is suppose to look like. I need a total of 5 Poems in the
booklet, 2 of them are already below in this document. The other 3 can be anything
( preferable about basketball, football or anything teenage related nothing
depressing )

Poem #2
Pick-up
Trudging towards the courts,
I finally arrived at the place I wanted to be all day.
I unlace my sneakers and set my bag down.
I lace up my basketball shoes and place my bag in the bleachers.
People stand and watch,
as others run up and down the courts.
I find myself standing and watching,
doing the same as all the others.
As I perform dynamic warm-ups,
I make my way towards an empty hoop.
Grab my ball, raise my arms, let the ball go, watch it sink in,
place my headphones in my ears, and mentally connect to the game.
As I run to rebound my shot, I notice someone waving.
“Hey, you want to play 3’s? We need one.”
