Reading response paper on Jack Deere, Surprised by the Power of the Spirit

Description: Students will write a 5-6 page response paper on Jack Deere, Surprised by the Power of the Spirit. In this assignment students should a) identify the author’s intent and purpose, b) determine whether the author achieved his or her objectives, c) critique the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s argument, d) make observations as to the usefulness or practical application of the book’s contents, and e) answer the following questions based on their reading of Deere’s book: “What did I learn about myself?” “What did the Lord show me?”

Assessment: A detailed grading rubric will be used to evaluate students’ papers to determine the extent to which they a) understood the author’s intent and purpose, b) demonstrated critical thought, and c) showed the ability to apply what they learned from reading this book.
