Infectious Disease Prevention and Control

Infectious Disease Prevention and Control
This Discussion topic is based on a case study. As in all case studies, review the facts of the case and consider public health nursing practice order to address the critical thinking questions.

Case

A public health nurse assigned to a district that includes a large urban school system notes that the incidence of HPV in young women with abnormal pap smears has risen. He is assigned to develop a series of educational programs for the youth and parent communities associated with the school system. We also know that the adolescent population is at high risk for HPV he is assigned to develop a series of educational programs for the youth and parent communities associated with the school system.

As a public health nurse, you know there are many factors involved when educating populations at risk for contracting HPV about the importance of disease prevention. In your discussion:

1. Identify recommendations the CDC has put forth about HPV vaccines.
2. Identify risk behaviors, with supporting rationale.
3. Identify social, cultural, and legal factors that may influence the decision to immunize, with supporting rationale.
4. Identify interventions that decrease risk, with supporting rationale.
