Indeed, policing has many elements that can either make a
strong police agency or unprofessional. Communities around the
world are multicultural, therefore, in order to have an effective
police force in every department there needs to be multicultural
police officers. By doing so, community members will feel
related to the police officers in a sense and will start building a
relationship to help deter crime. Moreover, communities will not
only collaborate with police officers, but will be an extra force
against crime itself. However, in order to see a positive change
from police officers they must follow the laws themselves.
Intergroup Relationships and Multicultural
Society
Firstly, communities are diverse and police agencies are
not. Not only communities are different from gender, race,
social class, but the expectation from the community to the
police are different as well. Building strong community
relations is the start off point to built a strong police force in
every police department. Next, are some key points to
address the problem and look for solutions.
Intergroup Relationships and
Multicultural Society
● Police agencies worldwide need mandate programs to
new and current police officers to revise racial profiling,
corruption, bribery, discrimination & communication skills.
● Prior to becoming police officers, candidates need to not
only pass a fitness exam, but an ongoing psychological
exam every month or upon the lack of professionalism
that they had developed with the community they serve.
● Public relations training within the community and the
police department is required to have a strong
collaboration into deterring crime & unprofessionalism.
Hiring Process in The Police Departments
Secondly, women in policing can make a great impact in making
policing stronger, because they have a nurture side, and they tend to use
less force when approaching presumed offenders. For instance, when
there are women who have been in sexual assaults they rather talk to
female officers, because they feel more comfortable to do so in oppose to
talking to a male officer. Of course, women are evolutionating since “The
President’s commission on law Enforcement and the Administration of
Justice (1967) found that police women could be an invaluable asset to
modern law enforcement and recommended that their role broadened to
include patrol and investigate duties as well as administrative
responsibilities” (pg 314, Cox). However, as we can see in current Police
Hiring Process in The Police Departments
Departments, there are women who are actually patrolling the streets, and they are no
longer sitting behind the desk. As we see there are currently “12.5, 26.5% of full law
enforcement officers” (pg. 315, Cox). As we can see, women should continue being part
of Law enforcement, not only because they are a great contribution of a strong policing,
but because there continue to be a great amount of unregister crimes from victims who
are women. For instance, as we see in our local newspaper and media, crimes are not
only being committed by men or women, therefore, there should also be the same
number of women and men in police agencies. Moreover, Sergeants and Lieutenants
should removed any groups from build within the police agencies, because they will be
under what is being discussed as Peer Pressure (pg. 299, Cox).
Break the Boundaries between minority
groups and Police Officers
Thirdly, police officers as well as community members need to come to a common
ground for the best of everybody. For instance, it is important to take in
consideration that “Understanding and communicating with me and women and
racial and ethnic groups that are characterized by different cultural values, attitudes,
and beliefs are essential for any public servant in a multicultural, multiethnic society”
(pg. 325, Cox). Police officers and the community need to have some type of
relationship in order to see a difference in deterrence of crime. Communities need
to be part of an integral part of the police force to strive in positive change for all.
Citizens Complaints and legitimacy of
Police Officers
Fourthly and Fifthly, Police Officers need to get to know the community they are
protecting and serving. Of course, Police Officers are making sure that the rules of
this country are being followed, but instead of using excessive force to solve
confrontations (unless it turns physical and the use of excessive force is required)
they need learn who lives in the community they are protecting. Certainly, laws
need to be enforce, but there will be so many saved lives if only police officers
would know how to handle the situations. Ofcourse, it is the collaboration from
the community and the police to come together, but not everyone in the public
know the laws of this country. Therefore, they act irresponsibly and irrational.
To sum up, there are many diversity issues that need to be looked at by both the
public and The Police Department. Communication and collaboration with the public
should not be seen as lowering standards from The Police Departments, but as
something to be done unquestionably. Police officers need to be familiar with the fact
that all citizens belong to different races and ethnic groups. By knowing this important
factor, their approach will not only be different, but their performance as Police Officers
will be gratifying and not judged. After all, police officers and citizens are what’s inside
communities. Therefore, collaboration and participation from both sides is highly
essential. Of course, there are many other elements that we need to discussed such as
how the media persuades the public about how ineffective is the Police, but the reality is
that we should not make assumptions until we have learn in detail about each case of
pressummed corruption from Police Officers or the Police Department itself. Certainly,
crimes in communities will not stop nor the lack of professionalism of some police
officers, but the initiative can start today. Let’s strive for a better policing and a better
tomorrow.
