PSYCH201 DuPage Stereotyping Prejudices & Discrimination Discussion Two discussions posts. 175 words in length for each response. No plagiarism allowed. Academic resources. Stereotyping, prejudices, and discrimination are the different stages of developing negative feelings for
groups that differ from you. Stereotyping is the first stage, it is the stage were you formulate your your
opinion on another group and develop negative feeling. These feeling can be brought about by not
understanding and knowing about that group so one formulates their own conceptions of that group
and mentally believe that their conceptions are true about that group. An example of stereotyping is
what the president Donald Trump did when he first was president, trying to stop muslims from entering
the United States. Prejudice is the second stage and in that stage a person gets emotionally involved in
their beliefs and perceptions of other groups. By emotionally involved I mean a person who is prejudice
treats groups they do not like with little or no respect, and many time they are even aggressive towards
them. Discrimination is the final stage it is the stage when one reveals through their behavior their
stereotyping and prejudice attitude. An example of discrimination would be treating a group different in
a inferior way.

Stereotyping, prejudices, and discrimination are all described by the author as a form of category based
responses to individuals and various groups that did not belong to that one particular individual.
Stereotypes are ideas or fixed perspectives on how a particular group of individuals are going to act
depending on the culture or group they are originally from(p.420) . Stereotyping individuals
automatically and often subconsciously places them in groups based on a preexisting belief system that
that individual belongs in a certain grip because of possibly their race, culture, education level, or
income level as just a few examples (p. 420). According to the text it is not assumed that the stereotypes
are accurate or inaccurate however when stereotyping within the community it is making a senses
about individuals although that might not be the case.
Prejudice is acting on feelings call my usually negative towards a specific individual or group because of
things like skin color, gender, or even intelligence level (p.421). Prejudices in the community prevents
individuals from obtaining employment in some cases, school entry, and even relationships (p.421).
Prejudices do not just affect the person that’s but rather those around him or her.
Discrimination is acting on the prejudices and stereotypes to treat the individual unfairly. Discrimination
within society can prevent individuals from bettering themselves (p.422). Discriminations within the
community Can be influenced by several different things including preconceived notions passed down
from generation to generation. Discrimination within the community causes disruption and separation.
