This article is about insight to the Islamic world’s current potion on science and
technology. It also includes the reasons why the Muslim world is behind on the modernization
and has lower level of economic prosperity and civil freedom. The chief problem it faces is the
distance from the modernization in the field of science and technology due to unstable political
condition of the Muslim states.
The author argues that the Muslim countries took a long in the phase of achieving
political stability and staying away from Western style democracy are underlying reasons which
explain why Muslims are behind in the field of science. This does not mean that the Muslims
were always behind in the science rather it has a golden era of science and research during 8th to
13th centuries, which ended with the fall of Baghdad from the hands of Mongols. Since then the
Muslims could not get back to the track of scientific advancements.
The Muslim world also faces this downfall due to the instability of the governments and
fights among themselves. Saudi Arabia, considered the center of the Muslim world, has remained
under siege by other Muslims. Even today, the government fears the loss of their power if they
shifted towards modernized democracy. All these factors have put a pressure on the personal
freedom of the people.
The Muslim world has negative sentiments towards the Western modernization as well.
They consider Western lifestyles against the teachings of Islam and in contrast to the Islamic
culture. This stereotypic viewpoint is hindering the Muslim world to even adopting just the
models that can lead to the advancement in the science and technology by leaving behind the
adoption of the Western culture.
Although the Muslims are behind in the race of the science and technology but they can
rise again. This can be possible because during their golden era they invented very advanced
knowledge and principles, which proved to be the foundation for the current development in
science and technology. The author argues that if the Muslims want to come forward in this field
of science again they would not have to work from the scratch rather they can use the work
already done by the West and move forward.

WIKI PROJECT: RELIGION IN THE NEWS
DUE TUESDAY, AUGUST 14
One of the objectives of this course is to witness the role and prevalence of various religions in American
culture. To achieve this goal, students will seek out stories (news, art, music, film, etc.) that illustrate this
interaction.
Specifically, students choose a group/topic (i.e., Religion and Church of Scientology in the News) and
they will be asked to complete the following:
(1) I will create a Wiki page for each group/topic within BlackBoard. Students need to decide upon a
topic relating religion to some aspect of culture (i.e., Islam and Education; Scientology and Tax
Status; Christian Fundamentalism and Evolution). I will have created the Wiki pages for a number of
different religions. Any additional religions students would like to pursue is in the final “other
religions” category.
(2) Students will build out the Wiki page highlighting articles, images, links, etc. relating to their chosen
religion. The page is due on Tuesday, August 14. See example on the Wiki Page home page in BB.
a. The articles should be either from academic journals or “reputable sources” such as
news magazines (i.e., Time) or newspapers (i.e., Washington Post). This means no blogs, no
wikipedia, etc. If you have a question on sources, let me know.
b. Each entry will have 4 components:
i. Bibliographic information (in proper formatting)
ii. Summary of the piece
iii. How the piece relates to the overall topic and your commentary
iv. Your initials/name
c. You can use the wiki page just as a word document. Edit the page and then save the page.
(3) Each student is responsible for contributing 2 articles/summaries under the same religion. If
the article has already been used, students need to find a different one.
(4) After the due date, we will have an “open” question and answer session where other students can
comment or pose questions about the group’s wiki and the articles. Groups can be asked why they
chose the topic, the key stories, and other interesting facets in looking into this theme.
