My initial response to “College in black and white: Campus environment and academic
achievement of African American males” was that the experience that African Americans have
on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and on Predominantly White
Institutions are completely different. There are
1 factors that African American Males face that
others don’t, their experiences in college have become major sources of concern and challenge
for many institutions of higher education. African American males presently account for 3.5% of
the total enrollment in U.S. colleges and universities (Davis, 1994.)
Cultural practices don’t provide excuse for narrowmindedness and prejudice. Both

narrowmindedness and prejudice as African American males represent one of the smallest
populations of students in higher education however, they represent the largest population of
college dropouts.
I do have cultural biases. My
biases are associated with identifying as an African

race and gender deal with. The problems
4 I have with dealing with things from an etic perspective
is that the experience is so real. Its hard to look at an experience where people are suffering, from
the perspective of the oppressor.

This article examined whether white students at predominantly black schools are as likely as
black students at white universities to report lower grades, less agreeable relations with
employees, view of convenience of decent variety in the grounds condition, and sentiments of
segregation. Information comprised of student reactions to polls disseminated to 7,428 students

Black students on predominantly white campuses detailed higher appraisals on sentiments of
segregation than whited students on black campuses however such feelings were likewise
revealed by white students at overwhelmingly black institutions. While black students on black
campuses experienced preferable associations with personnel over black students on white
grounds, there was no distinction in the nature of student-employee connections detailed by
white students on the two kinds of campuses. Given the social and financial issues faced by

African American males in the United States, their encounters in school have turned out to be
significant sources of concern and challenge for some foundations of advanced education.
African American males represent 3.5% of the total enrollment in U.S. schools and colleges;
however, they are disproportionately represented among drop out numbers, those with relative
lower academic performance levels, and the individuals who have increasingly negative school
experiences. Increased educational opportunities for African Americans have happened since
integration strategies changed the socioeconomics of most advanced education establishments,
however the performance of African American males have not reflected that.
