The aim of this course is to prepare you for writing and designing documents in technical
and professional discourse communities. There are several facts of contemporary
technical and professional writing that are crucial to successful composing:
writing/managing projects in group settings, goal/purpose orientation, and ethical
responsibilities to communicate to multiple audiences with varying levels of knowledge.
We will approach technical writing in terms of organizational conventions, audience
expectations, real-world applications, visual design, format, and style. This is a writing
class so you will be expected to write something every class. Please bring writing
materials to utilize in class. Because technical writing is most often collaborative, you
will need to compose several class projects in small groups and in different media.
Therefore, you will depend on each other for the majority of your grade in this class.

Attendance and Classroom Procedures
Absence affects the quality of participation in workshops and discussions and the
performance on projects and homework assignments. Two absences will result in
failing grade. Please refer to pages 65-72 of the SCCC catalogue for academic policies
on academic integrity (cheating/plagiarism) and attendance. Please refer to pages 72-73
for student code of conduct. Lateness is also disruptive to the classroom environment
and should be avoided. Each lateness will be considered half an absence, as will
leaving class early unexcused. You are responsible for assignments given on days you
are absent. I will not “reteach” what we did in class over e-mail. Please turn off all cell
phones and no texting in class. If I see you texting in class, I will mark you absent.
