Married Life tells what the marriage of hindoo is like. The little girl of the rich family
will add some dowry and find a better husband. Most girls are asked to marry an old
man of 50 or 60 years old. Girls do not have the right to choose their own marriage,
they are arranged by the family. They were married when they were twelve or three
years old or even younger. They are more like the husband’s own products, to comply
with the rules of the family. I feel that there is no choice in their life, no freedom.
Legal Rights tells the women of that era and did not get the rights they deserved. For
example, family women do not have the right to vote. However, every citizen has the
right to vote. Why are women not allowed to vote? This is unequal.
Tolstoy
Ivan’s life was first focused on work and neglected the family. After the injury, Ivan
was unhappy and found the reason for his unhappiness when he was dying. He had
the opportunity to improve his relationship with his wife and children, but he did not
grasp it. When he lost, he knew that it was cherished. It was already late and it was
too late. Therefore, when he died, the expression on his face was not good-looking.
Opportunity
The women of Ramabai era did not have the opportunity to choose their own future,
and Ivan had the opportunity, but he did not cherish it. Therefore, when there is an
opportunity to be in front of us, we should consider it well.

In Ramabai’s “Married Life” and “Legal Rights” she talks about the different parts of
Hinduism. She talks about arranged marriage , child marriage and the inhuman
expectations set for women. After reading this text the main missed opportunity I
noticed was marriage. Women were not allowed to have a choice in their groom.
They had to have arranged marriages at young ages and just accept them as their
husbands. I think that’s extremely sad and definitely a missed opportunity. It should
be someone’s choice if they choose to marry someone. I don’t feel it’s fair to force
someone into an arranged marriage. I also feel it’s horrible for young girls to be put in
a marriage. They are losing the opportunity of a normal childhood and growing up to
make their own decisions. – Tolstoys “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” basically describes
how one can feel their life was meaningless. When Ivan llyich is on his deathbed he
begins to wonder what his life has meant. He thinks about if he’s made the right
choices in life. I feel like the missed opportunity in this text was llyich missing out on
life by living for others. No matter how successful you are if you are not living for
yourself you can never be truly happy. You can’t live by how others expect you to.
You should never leave the world with doubts and feeling your life was meaningless.
I definitely feel that both texts still show opportunities that are missed today.
Especially Tolstoys “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”. There are a lot of people that grow old
and on their death bed realize they never actually lived the life they wanted but the
one others wanted for them.
