CULTURE AND PERCEPTION

Culture is the features and knowledge shared by a specific group of people with common
history and verbal and nonverbal symbol system (Neuliep, 2018). It entails their language,
religion, meals, habits, and arts. On the other hand, cultural identity is the feeling of possession
and belonging to a certain group of people or culture. A person is identified to be of a certain
culture according to what that person does, the religion of that person, the social class and
ethnicity. In this paper, we are going to discuss the elements of intercultural communication of
the Hispanics from the origin of Spain.
Describe the Cultural Identity of the Hispanics of Spain
The identity of the Spanish refers to the language of the people of the Spanish speaking
origin. Spanish people describe their identity according to their origin. Majority of the Spanish
people use the origin of their family to describe themselves. However, Spanish people can be
described as people who originate from Spain. Although there is a disclaimer that not all people
who speak Spanish are Hispanic since not all of them originate from Spain rather they are from
Brazil (Liu, 2014).
The Spanish culture in Spain are very welcoming and their culture is very unique. The
country is known for sunshine and the beautiful exotic beaches. As well as Spain is known for
distinctive festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Spain’s traditions includes bullfighting,
their language and religion, what they believe art, cuisine, and history and family values. The
Spanish culture is the tradition and customs of people with the American origin but their original
language is Spanish. This should not be confused with the culture of the Spanish people, which
involves the traditions and heritage of the people of Spain (Liu, 2014).
CULTURE AND PERCEPTION

These people whose origin is Spain have holidays, which they strictly observe. The
culture in Spain are more traditional compared to other Americans. They always keep their
culture alive. The holidays of the Spain people are in most cases for giving the opportunity to
make a good connection to family members, friends, and community. There is a variety of
celebrations of the Spanish people. There is a religious celebration, which is for the patriotic
people. The religious celebrations include the Christmas celebrations, which are observed by the
Spanish despite it being observed by other cultures. They also observe the Holy Week, which is a
deep religious Hispanic holiday. This week is the last week of lent which comes just before
Easter.
Their common language is the Spanish language. The number of Spanish speaking
people in the United States increases each year. This is because the Spanish families teach their
children Spanish language. This evidently shows that Spanish people observe their culture
because they make their kids learn Spanish language as a way of passing down their culture and
heritage to them. They took advantage of the fact of one having the ability to speak more than
one language. This helped to revive the Spanish language in the United States.
Their meals also are also unique and they have made it influence the Americans on their
cuisine and eating habits. Some of their meals include corn-based dishes and vegetable. Fries are
also among their renowned dishes. Olive Oil is mainly used across the region of Spain as well as
lard and butter being used for their great cuisines. The Spain origin people also have value for
the family. They keep close contact with their families and their bond is strong. They value
living close to each other close to three generations.

They value their culture and family relations too. They also have a collection that reflects
their art and artists. Francisco de Goya was a known painter from Spain back in the eighteen
centuries. People like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Salvador Dali were known as ambassadors
of art in Spain, as they left their lasting touches on the Spanish culture. They shaped their artistic
movements and recalibrated their themes in Americans art and culture meaning the Hispanic
value their art and artists. They also relate to each other so well by keeping their relational ties
intact among themselves. This is brought about by the gatherings that they have during the
holiday seasons (Webb, 2019).
Compare and Contrast Symbolic Representations of the Hispanic People
Media of Spain involves a variety of formats like radio, television, newspapers, and
magazines. According to the Spanish media, the symbolic representation of the people of Spain
shows the analysis in different perspectives. The empirical cultivation analyzes the socialcognitive effects and the misinterpretation of racial reality. The Spanish media ensures that there
is the empowerment of their culture. They make sure that the messages they deliver are not
contradicting and do not in any way affect the Spanish people. The media also makes sure that
they analyze the content and make sure that there is an association of the Spanish people at the
media, which helps in improving the media industry (Nakayama, 2014).
The Spain origin individuals occupy the minimum percentage of the people of America.
However, they are rarely seen on television. This kind of pattern of the Spanish un-representation
has been in existence for a long period. Despite the skillful art that they possess, they were
undermined and were not present in the media. However, recently more Spanish individuals have

been allowed to be on the media and this has made the media industry grow at a higher rate
(Webb, 2019).
There are huge Spanish media houses in the United States ranging from the big
broadcasting networks to local radio stations. The availability of the Spanish media in the United
States has made all origins of Spanish individuals watch sports, soap operas, and other programs.
This has enabled the growth of soccer popularity in the United States. They have also been of
great influence in the music industry has many Spain Spanish decent artists. The Spanish people
are among the best performing artists making the States famous. And also the United States
media grow because of the Spanish artistic skills.
According to the academic research finding, the culture of the Spain origin has been
maintained for decades. They have always ensured that their culture and believes are kept. Also,
what they value be it in the family perspective or community, they made sure it was highly
protected. The academic research finding also indicates that the Spanish people are intelligent
since they made sure that their culture is not faded. The ensured that their culture and believes
are kept and passed along to their generations.
In the past the Spanish people who originate from Spain were considered conservative.
They had strict social preservation of traditionalism. They strictly observed how they interacted
publicly either in the media, in social forums or in any public gathering. However, in the current
state there is much more exposure. The reserved culture presently is reduced compared to the
past. Notably, the position of women leadership in the society is increasing in the current time
comparing to the past.

Role of Mass Media Channels in Intercultural Communication
The media plays a major role in intercultural communication among Spanish people and
other communities. It plays the communication role both directly and indirectly. The media plays
a role of entertainment; this gives both communities the chance to have intercultural
communication. The different cultures have the privilege to learn from each other’s cultures. The
media also gives communities of different cultures the opportunity to learn from each other. The
intercultural communities get the chance to know the different culture and values from each
other, which enhances their knowledge. The media has also helped the people of different
cultures to interact with each other and learn from each other.
In conclusion, the culture and perception of Spanish people has been effective in the
United States. Their cultural values and beliefs have been able to change the perspective of the
non-Spanish people. Their artistic nature to have made the media stations change and grow
significantly. This, therefore, means that people of different cultures need to observe their
cultures because it is beneficial.
