1. HCI History and Background
As a field, HCI has come a long way. It was previously understood as man-machine
interaction (Scane, 2002). It specifically deals with the design, implementation, as well as

assessment of computing systems and related technologies that are meant for human use.
However, it is multidisciplinary as it may be used in many fields, particularly those areas with
possible computer installations. For instance, some of the fields where HCI may be used with
distinctive significance include psychology, industrial design, as well as computer science
(Scane, 2002). In psychology, HCI has played an important function in the application of
theories, with several analytical purposes. Moreover, in the industrial design, HCI has been
paramount in the manufacture of interactive commodities, including microwaves and mobile
phones.
Right from the invention of computers, which were performing batch processes into the
emergency of user-engineered designs, there have been many milestones within the computing
arena. Most of the initial computers, including ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And
Computer) that was manufactured in 1946, developments within the hardware technology have
seen several and enormous advancement in computing capacity. From earlier years, starting
1930s, individuals began thinking about groundbreaking concepts (Shneiderman, Plaisant,
Cohen, Jacobs, & Elmqvist, 2018). Visual display Units (VDU) was also made possible during
the 1950s, especially with the introduction of semi-automatic ground environment (SAGE),
earlier form of VDU, as well as air defense systems in the United States (Scane, 2002). With
Ivan Sutherland’s development of Sketchpad in 1962, he proved that computing could be used to
perform more functions apart from data processing. In the year 1963, Douglas Engelbart brought
the concept of programming, enabling the development of smaller and larger systems. The
introduction of Word Processor in 1960 paved the way for the introduction of personal
computers, especially Dynabook, in 1970s.

Later, the idea of windows and WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointer) interfaces were
introduced, enabling people to perform simultaneous works using a single computer.
Additionally, these interfaces also enabled individuals to switch between works and screens,
leading to sequential interactions. Ben Shneiderman also introduced direct manipulation in
1982, where he used Apple Mac to decrease the chances for syntactic mistakes. Vannevar Bush’s
invention of Hypertexts in the year 1945 had also allowed people to represent non-linear
structures of text. During 1980s, multimodality was made possible, with computer mediated
communications emerging during 1990s. In 1993, the first ever graphical browser was initiated.
HCI also has important roots in India, especially with the innovation of creation and graphic
communication experts who began showing interests in the HCI field during the late 1980s.
Whereas some designers in India designed programs for CD ROM titles, others were busy
creating webs and offering computer teaching.
2. Steps and options available to use and complete the task
My Chosen HCI is a hotel reservation system. When developing this system, several adhoc requirements must be considered. In the first place, the guest has to make a reservation. The
hotel then takes as much reservation considering the number of rooms it has available. When the
guest checks in, he or she is then processed at the customer care area, with a registration expert.
The next step that follows includes the clerk checking the provided details by the guest,
comparing with those that have already been recorded in efforts to verify their authenticity.
Sometimes, guests may not make their reservations before arriving at the hotel. Other guests may
also prefer staying in non-smoking rooms. Besides, when the guest finally leaves the room, he or
she is also processed by the clerk, who checks for the details of the guest stay and prints the
required bill. The final step involves the guest clearing his or her bill, and then leaving the hotel

premises at his or her own convenience. The hotel room then becomes vacant or unoccupied and
ready for the next guest. While developing the hotel reservation system, there is greater need to
remain consistent, ensure constant feedback, demand for authentication information, ensure easy
reversal of actions, reduce the amount of information required, as well as minimize mistakes.
Other important things to keep in mind include clarifying activities and using simple actions or
commands.
