In both the Customs and Border Patrol and in the Department of
Defense communication from the top down come in the form of
training. The upper management would create a video, usually
about 15-20 minutes in length and then hang it on the Learning
Management System (LMS). All employees would be required to
view the communication before a designated date and if the
communication wasn’t viewed the supervisors would be held
accountable for the lack of viewing. Promotions could be
interrupted and even denied based on the lack of enforcing the
viewing of the communication or simply the lack of viewing. This
is how the Federal government using training for

Hello Classmates,
I am an operations manager for a major shipping company.
When hired, I had to complete the training online and in the
classroom. Every few months, it’s another online video or
another classroom setting every couple of years.
The purpose of the classes and are to update you on policy
changes. The updates can range from timekeeping with
attendance to inputting paid time off. Sexual harassment and
quarterly earning report meetings are most common.
I thought the class setting was more effective because you’re
engaged with others. Depending on the information I have to
retain will dictate for me, the mode in which I learn. For
example, if it is information that bores me, or I am struggling to
get it, I will seek many forms of transmission as reading many
forums from different avenues, I watch investigative reporting or
documentaries. If I am engaged in the learning material, I can
absorb the intended lesson.
