HUMS 201 Written Assignment
7-8 Pages

APA Style
Nosce te ipsum (Know Thyself)
If your goal is to be a successful electrical engineer, self knowledge might be helpful but not necessary. If you
will be working in human services as a Case Manager, Therapist or Psychologist, self knowledge is incredibly
important.
The goal of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to take a long hard and honest look at yourself, your
strengths, your weakness, biases and penchants. It is a cliché but it also true, the hardest person to get to know is
yourself. This paper does not require you to look up and reference research, books or journals, it does require
you to be as honest as you can and to be thoughtful about these questions. Use the following areas to organize
your paper.
1. It has been said that one is either a victim of their past or a survivor of it. No one escapes their experiences.
How have your life experiences shaped you as a person, your interests and your interpersonal skills.
2. When it comes to your interpersonal skills, how do you deal with conflict, what is your style of interacting
with authority figures in your life and what type of people get under your skin and frustrate you.
3. Irrational beliefs, we all have them. Which irrational beliefs do you have and what impact have they have on
your life or relationships. Use the list of irrational beliefs provided in class. Come up with at least one.
4. When it comes to your emotional health, you are said to be as healthy as your coping mechanisms. Identify
examples of both emotional and problem focused coping that you use. Touch upon any ideas you may have
about avoiding burnout as a student or working in the field.
5. Generational issues related to technology, social media, problem solving and interpersonal skills. There are
positive and negative stereotypes associated with millennials and generation Z individuals. Do you fit these
stereotypes? How has your use of smart phones effected your interpersonal skills. Is your generation less tough
than previous generations and if yes, why. Is your generation more prone to depression?
6. Diversity is an issue in human services that needs to be discussed and understood. What stereotypes do you
have and how do you think they will effect your ability to work with different populations. (sex, sexual
orientation, religious affiliation, ethnic background, race, SES or political affiliation)
