First and foremost, as an athlete this book caught my attention immediately. The story of
Chris Herren is very well known, and like Ryana and Faith, he also came to my high school
to talk about his experience with drugs and basketball. Having some knowledge about his
story definitely played a role in why I chose this book to read. The presentation at my school
was almost 5 years ago, and due a combination of forgetting some of his story, and wanting
to learn more, I figured reading his book Basketball Junkie would be the perfect way to
learn more about his experiences, and refresh my memory. Overall, I think I made the right
choice. This book is so eye opening and I would recommend it to anyone, even if reading is
not your strong suit.

My initial reaction to the book Basketball Junkie was how drugs can completely ruin
someones live. Chris Herren had his life made he was going to be an NBA star and represent
his hometown Fall River Massachusetts but addiction got the best of him and completely
ruined his career. I had a lot of prior knowledge about Mr. Herren because he came to my
high school and told us his story and I have never forgot it. It was heart wrenching because
he seemed like such a humble guy that it was hard for me to believe that he had been
hooked on drugs. I really enjoyed this book because it was able to tell me his full story and
everything that happened in his life during high school and through out his short NBA
career. I think most college athletes should honestly read this book because what happened
to Chris can happen to anyone which is sad because its such a waste of talent. I felt bad for
Mr. Herron but Im glad he was able to over come his addiction.
