This speech is your final exam, so you should treat it as
such (although there is the second written test). It is worth 20%
of your entire grade. They are given on the last day – there can
be NO late outlines/speeches. The emphasis of this speech will
be to provide a solution to a problem.
> The target time for this speech is 8 minutes. As always, you
have 45 seconds on either side.
> Make sure your speech contains the five steps discussed. You
may not use a Rhetorical Question as your Attention Getting
step unless combined with one of the other five methods. You
must use one of the other five methods gone over in lecture.
Make sure you also have a thesis statement, review, and signal
(besides just “thank you). You may use two (4 x 6 maximum)
note cards (front and back).
If you have not yet used a visual aid, you must have one in
this speech. Failure to do so will result in 50 points (half an
entire letter grade) being deducted from your final course
grade total. If you have used one, consider using a second one
and getting extra credit.
You must have four DIRECT quotes from four different
sources within your speech. All statistics ALWAYS get a
source cite (and you probably should have statistics).
You must have a correct outline with a correct bibliography
prior to the speech. For this outline, you will either get the full
20 points, or 5 points.
→ The thrust of this speech is to provide a solution to a problem.
You first need to argue that a significant problem exists (a
different topic than speech #3). Be sure to include the
“causes” of the problem, then have your plan address the
causes. You should have one specific solution to that problem,
and advantages from that solution (your one plan can have
multiple steps covering multiple causes). Deal with a REAL
WORLD problem. Have good arguments with all the
necessary parts. Check your notes.
→ You are in the position of authority. If given an opportunity in
the real world, your plan should actually have a chance of
working. It must be something that is technologically feasible,
and probably have a funding mechanism. You must be
prepared to be able to force people to follow your plan against
their will (have enforcement). Fit the criteria from lecture.
